Railway Car Technician

About the role

The Railway Car Technician is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing and remanufacturing passenger and freight railway cars and their components. The position reports to the Supervisor of Equipment Maintenance within the Rail Mechanical department and is based in Cochrane.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect, troubleshoot, repair and test rail car equipment.
• Perform preventative maintenance tasks.
• Interpret and work from blueprints.
• Use hand tools and various testing devices and instruments.
• Operate overhead or mobile cranes and forklifts to assist with assignments.
• Adapt to new methods, processes, materials and equipment.
• Follow prescribed safety procedures and wear required safety clothing and equipment.
• Work various shifts, including weekends, and perform duties outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

Required profile

• High School Diploma (OSSD) or GED.
• Certificate of Qualification as Railway Car Technician (268R) or be in the final year of the apprenticeship for this trade.
• Mechanically inclined and able to work in a team environment.
• Available for shift work and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Knowledge of safety codes and a strong commitment to health and safety.
• Valid driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Proficiency with hand tools.
• Use of testing devices and instruments.
• Operation of overhead or mobile cranes.
• Forklift operation.
• Reading and interpreting blueprints.
