Metal Grader/Sorter – Scrap Yard

About the role

The Metal Grader/Sorter works in a recycling yard to grade and sort incoming metal products, ensuring they meet appearance and quality standards for further processing. This physically demanding position supports yard cleanliness and equipment upkeep.

Key responsibilities

• Grade and sort metal scrap based on appearance, quality, and specifications.
• Perform general yard cleanup, including digging, sweeping, weed removal, and blacktop repair.
• Assist with basic sorting of scrap, metal, and debris before processing.
• Grease and clean equipment at shear and shredder stations.
• Support repairs and maintenance tasks, including railroad‑related work.
• Provide backup assistance across the yard as needed.
• Report equipment deficiencies or malfunctions to supervisors.

Required profile

• Ability to work on uneven ground, lift/carry up to 50 lb occasionally, and perform crouching, bending, reaching, climbing, twisting, pushing, and pulling.
• Good visual acuity for detailed inspection and ability to hear and communicate clearly.
• Capability to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
• Basic English proficiency.
• Willingness to learn new tasks; prior scrap‑yard experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate an automobile.
