Assistant Professor – Regulated Plant Pests (Tenure‑Track)

About the role

The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at McGill University seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor to lead an independent research program on regulated plant pests. The position is part of the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders initiative, which provides substantial research funding to advance Canada’s strategic priorities in environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain an internationally recognised, externally funded research programme on the biology, diagnostics, epidemiology, and management of regulated pests, invasive species, or quarantine organisms affecting Canadian agriculture.
• Teach core undergraduate courses (e.g., Insect Biology, Pesticides in Agriculture) and a graduate course in Integrated Pest Management.
• Utilise the Plant Pest Containment Laboratory and other campus facilities to conduct high‑containment research.
• Collaborate with government agencies, industry partners, and international plant health organisations, and contribute to departmental and university committees.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Plant Health, Plant Biology, Integrated Pest Management or a closely related field.
• Track record of working in Biosafety Level 2 or 3 containment facilities handling quarantine or regulated pests.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian plant protection legislation and international phytosanitary standards.
• Eligibility: internationally based on 28 June 2026 and within five years of first research‑related appointment.

Required skills

• Experience with Biosafety Level 2 and Biosafety Level 3 laboratory techniques.
• Expertise in pest diagnostics, epidemiology, and integrated pest management.
• Ability to secure external research funding and manage research infrastructure.
• Strong English communication skills; French proficiency and experience with the Canadian agri‑food sector are assets.
