About the role
Mastercard is looking for a Senior Counsel to act as the Canadian Data Protection Officer for its Services business. The role provides practical, business‑oriented legal advice on privacy, AI, data protection and consumer protection to enable product launches and ensure regulatory compliance in Canada.
Key responsibilities
- Serve as the lead legal advisor on Canadian privacy, AI, data protection and consumer protection matters.
- Provide guidance on product design, data use, consent, automated decision‑making, cross‑border transfers and related compliance controls.
- Review privacy impact assessments, transfer assessments, product risk assessments and customer communications for legal alignment.
- Develop contract templates, playbooks and negotiate privacy language in agreements with affiliates, vendors and customers.
- Monitor U.S. and Canadian regulatory developments and translate them into actionable guidance for business stakeholders.
- Coordinate with U.S., regional and global privacy teams to ensure consistency while highlighting Canada‑specific requirements.
Required profile
- Canadian law degree and membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial bar.
- Minimum eight years post‑qualification experience, preferably in technology, payments, fintech or data‑enabled products.
- Deep knowledge of Canadian privacy laws (PIPEDA, Quebec Law 25) and emerging AI regulations.
- Familiarity with U.S., EU and global privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) and ability to identify differences.
- Proven experience advising product teams on go‑to‑market strategy, privacy‑by‑design and regulatory readiness.
- Strong drafting, analytical and stakeholder‑management skills with ability to work independently in a fast‑moving environment.
What we offer
- Competitive salary range of $150,000 – $234,000 CAD per year, based on experience and location.
- Eligibility for a discretionary annual incentive program.
- Hybrid work model with an expectation of three days per week in the Toronto office.
