Mechanical CAD Engineering Intern

About the role

The Mechanical CAD Engineering Intern will join Q-Block Computing’s engineering team to design and model precision mechanical and optomechanical components for quantum hardware. This hands‑on role involves creating CAD models that will be machined, assembled, tested, and iterated under demanding environmental constraints.

Key responsibilities

• Design and model precision mechanical and optomechanical components using SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, or comparable CAD software.
• Develop detailed technical drawings and 3D assemblies for hardware programs, ensuring manufacturability and structural integrity.
• Work with exotic materials such as titanium, Invar, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, ceramics, and composites.
• Apply appropriate tolerancing, fits, and fastening practices for optics‑grade and quantum hardware assemblies.
• Collaborate with engineers and scientists to translate requirements into clean, manufacturable solutions and participate in design reviews.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related undergraduate program.
• Completed at least two years of coursework (60+ credit hours) at the start of the term.
• Demonstrated academic or project experience in mechanical design using CAD software.
• Working understanding of tolerancing, fits, and mechanical fasteners.

Required skills

• SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, AutoCAD (or equivalent 3D CAD tools).
• CAM software and practical knowledge of CNC machining principles.
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools and thermal or structural simulation software.
• Materials selection for precision mechanical design.
