Staff Software Engineer – Metadata

About the role

Fivetran and dbt Labs are building data pipelines that power the modern data stack for thousands of companies. We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Metadata team, owning the discovery API, catalog, lineage, and run‑history services that help customers understand and trust their data.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and delivery of complex, team‑level projects across Metadata services.
• Architect new subsystems and own them end‑to‑end.
• Use AI tooling and agents throughout the development lifecycle.
• Review and approve technical designs, ensuring high quality.
• Drive initiatives for discovery API, catalog, lineage, and run history.
• Set and enforce design, architecture, and coding best practices.
• Coach and mentor engineers to improve code quality.
• Write technical specs, maintain documentation, and participate in on‑call rotation.

Required profile

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with proven leadership on complex, team‑scope projects.
• Deep expertise designing and owning subsystems in distributed, cloud‑based systems.
• Strong design and architecture judgment with ability to identify and fix flaws.
• Track record of raising quality through code reviews and coaching.
• Experience partnering with QE on test strategy and operational health.
• Proficiency in a modern backend language such as Python, Java, C++ or C#.
