Staff Software Engineer, Issue Workflow

About the role

Issue Workflow is Sentry's primary product surface, processing billions of events daily and turning them into actionable insights for developers. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Issue Workflow team, you will architect high‑scale distributed systems, build real‑time data pipelines, search backends, and analysis systems that surface signal from noise. This product engineering role operates at massive scale, where every architectural decision impacts millions of debugging sessions.

Key responsibilities

• Drive technical strategy and roadmap, partnering with engineering leadership, product, and design to shape a multi‑quarter vision for the Issue Workflow platform, making strategic decisions about architecture, technology choices, and technical debt.
• Solve complex performance and scalability challenges across billions‑of‑events workloads.
• Champion product quality and user experience by building features that delight, paying attention to milliseconds‑level performance, interface details, and comprehensive instrumentation.
• Mentor and elevate teammates, helping engineers grow their skills in systems design, coding practices, and product thinking.

Required profile

• Deep experience as a distributed systems engineer, familiar with eventual consistency, partitioning strategies, caching layers, and query optimization, and able to design for failure and graceful degradation.
• Product‑mindset with strong collaboration skills, able to work closely with Product and Design and translate technical constraints into user‑centric language.
• Full‑stack instincts: while the role is backend‑heavy, you understand the entire data flow from ingestion to browser rendering, including frontend performance and API design.
• Commitment to inclusion, regularly sharing knowledge, celebrating wins, and learning from failures with teammates.

Required skills

• 10+ years of full‑stack software engineering experience, ideally with Python and TypeScript.
• Expertise in domain modeling, distributed systems, data stores, and message queues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and Kafka (preferred).
