Sound Recording Technician

About the role

The Sound Recording Technician supports the Communications & Production unit by providing end‑to‑end audio (and occasional video) services for concerts, rehearsals and other events. This part‑time, fixed‑term position is designed for a graduate student in the Sound Recording program at McGill's Schulich School of Music.

Key responsibilities

• Liaise with clients to determine technical requirements.
• Reserve space, organize equipment and attend dress rehearsals to confirm microphone placement.
• Set up audio (and video) gear before events, record performances, and regulate levels during recording.
• Mix live audio, perform post‑production editing, and deliver final files in required digital formats within two weeks.
• Strike and return equipment after each session.

Required profile

• Current enrollee in the Graduate Program of Sound Recording at the Schulich School of Music (or approved Qualifying Year student).
• Full knowledge of SSM venues, associated audio/video equipment and DAW software.
• Proficiency with standard stereo microphone techniques and ability to work under strict timelines.
• Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
• Authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in Quebec.

What we offer

• Hourly wage of $18.00 (CAD)
• Part‑time schedule (approximately 2 hours per week)
