Research Manager, Biological Safety

About the role

Anthropic is looking for a Research Manager to lead its Biological Safety research team within the Safeguards organization. The manager will guide research scientists and engineers in designing evaluations, curating datasets, and building classifiers that ensure AI models handle biological knowledge safely.

Key responsibilities

• Manage, coach, and grow a team of research scientists and engineers, handling hiring, onboarding, performance, and career development.
• Set technical direction and roadmap for the biological safety research agenda, deciding priorities and release readiness.
• Own the quality of capability evaluations for biological domains and translate results into deployment recommendations.
• Guide development of training and evaluation datasets, collaborating with threat‑modeling experts.
• Oversee training and iteration of safety classifiers with ML engineers, optimizing for adversarial robustness and low false‑positive rates.
• Ensure tooling and pipelines enable fast, repeatable evaluation and classifier development.
• Establish metrics for classifier and evaluation performance in production traffic, identify gaps, and prioritize improvements.
• Direct red‑team and stress‑testing activities to validate safeguards.

Required profile

• Hands‑on manager with experience leading research scientists and engineers.
• Strong technical background in machine‑learning research and AI model evaluation.
• Ability to assess and improve biological safety of frontier models.
• Proven track record of setting technical direction and delivering research outcomes.
• Excellent communication skills to represent work to research, product, and policy partners.
