PhD Sound Recording Technician

About the role

This part‑time position supports McGill University’s Communications & Production unit by providing professional concert recording, live‑sound operation, and webcasting services. The role is designed for a PhD candidate in the Sound Recording program at the Schulich School of Music.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in planning and executing concert recordings, live‑sound support, and webcasts under the direction of Communications & Production.
• Record concerts and deliver the final audio product to the Production Office within two weeks.
• Perform sound checks, operate the soundboard, and monitor audio levels and quality during events.
• Maintain studio equipment, oversee junior students when required, and ensure all gear is organized and ready for use.
• Attend dress rehearsals (unless a class conflict exists) and set up equipment before each performance.
• Complete additional tasks assigned by Communications & Production and the Sound Recording Faculty in labs and studios.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled as a PhD student in the Sound Recording program at the Schulich School of Music.
• Full knowledge of SSM concert halls, event spaces, and associated recording equipment.
• Proficiency with digital audio workstation software and standard stereo microphone techniques.
• Ability to work under strict timelines and communicate effectively in English (French is an asset).
• Authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in Quebec.
