Optomechanical Design Engineer

About the role

The Optomechanical Design Engineer will own the mechanical and optomechanical design of Q‑Block's quantum hardware platforms, taking systems from laboratory prototypes to field‑ready, environmentally hardened products. This role blends sub‑micron precision optical design with rugged, deployable engineering for mission‑critical applications.

Key responsibilities

• Design precision optomechanical mounts, flexure assemblies, lens housings, and beam‑path structures that maintain sub‑micron alignment under thermal and vibration loads.
• Develop 3D CAD models and assembly layouts of complete hardware modules integrating optical, electronic, and mechanical subsystems.
• Conduct thermal analysis of enclosed optical‑electronic assemblies and design thermal management solutions such as heat sinks, TEC interfaces, and airflow paths.
• Perform tolerance stack‑up analysis and ensure alignment budgets are achievable given manufacturing tolerances and environmental effects.
• Assess designs against environmental qualification standards (MIL‑STD‑810, MIL‑STD‑461) and coordinate with CNC machinists, fabricators, and vendors for DFM reviews and production support.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics or a related field.
• 4+ years of professional mechanical design experience, including at least 2 years in optomechanical system design.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain Government of Canada security clearance and comply with the Controlled Goods Program.
• Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and clear written and verbal communication.

Required skills

• 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred; Inventor, Creo acceptable).
• GD&T and tolerance analysis for precision assemblies.
• Thermal simulation tools (ANSYS, COMSOL, SolidWorks Simulation).
• Structural simulation (modal, vibration, shock response).
• Manufacturing processes: CNC milling, turning, wire EDM, sheet‑metal fabrication, anodizing, precision grinding.
• Materials selection for optical and defence applications (aluminum alloys 6061/7075, stainless steel, titanium, Invar, ceramics, engineering plastics).
