Industrial Safety Medic (Casual)

About the role

Elk Valley Resources (EVR), a Canadian steelmaking coal producer operating four mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia, is hiring a casual Industrial Safety Medic. Reporting to the Coordinator, Safety & Loss Control, the role covers health, safety and site security. It is a casual position with no fixed schedule, with shifts covering both days and nights.

Key responsibilities

• Take part in and follow health and safety programs and policies
• Support the high-potential risk control strategy through risk assessments, gap analyses and effectiveness reviews
• Help manage contractor risk by reviewing safe work plans
• Perform industrial hygiene monitoring, control access to and egress from the site
• Facilitate training for health and safety initiatives and new hire orientation, and run awareness and education activities
• Carry out periodic health and safety inspections and take part in audits as required
• Help develop and implement occupational health and safety programs
• Provide overall site protection, including fire systems
• Promote health and safety leadership among employees and contractors, mentoring on site procedures
• Provide first aid, collect drug and alcohol samples and complete accurate first aid reports
• Support incident investigations and programs such as confined space, hazardous energy isolation and fall protection

Required profile

• High school diploma
• Advanced First Aid (formerly OFA Level III) or equivalent
• Valid Class 5 driver's licence or equivalent
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to speak in front of large groups
• Strong organization, troubleshooting, critical thinking and decision-making abilities
• Two years of relevant health and safety experience or a mine rescue ticket is an asset

Required skills

• Strong computer skills, especially with the Microsoft Office Suite

The stated hourly rate is $32.87 per hour; the actual base salary depends on experience, skills and competencies. Selected candidates must agree to a pre-employment drug screen and three professional references.
