Data Architect

About the role

ICES is seeking a Data Architect to join the Data Quality and Information Management department. Reporting to the Director, DQIM, the role provides expertise in data architecture, governance, processing, security and modernization across ICES data environments.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the enterprise data architecture strategy, roadmap and governance framework, including data models, platforms and AI‑enabled capabilities.
• Design, optimise and govern data warehouses, data lakes, integration frameworks, metadata and security controls.
• Lead end‑to‑end data architecture modernisation initiatives, from platform evaluation to deployment and continuous improvement.
• Research and recommend emerging technologies to support analytics, AI and scalability.
• Provide architectural guidance on data classification, retention, access controls and secure data‑sharing.
• Coach and mentor team members, fostering knowledge sharing and professional growth.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.
• At least 6 years of experience designing and implementing data solutions on on‑premises, cloud or hybrid environments.
• Relevant certifications in cloud, data architecture or databases.
• Preferred: Master’s degree, experience in health research or public‑sector data, and certifications such as AWS, Azure, GCP, TOGAF or DAMA/CDMP.

Required skills

• Data modelling and SQL development.
• Database administration (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, MySQL, MongoDB, NoSQL).
• Data Lake architecture and big‑data processing (Hive, Pig, Hadoop, Python, shell scripting).
• Data governance, ETL design, data security and data quality management.
• Cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, GCP.
