Assistant Professor – Theatre (Directing & Production)

About the role

The Department of Theatre at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position starting July 1 2027. The successful candidate will join a nationally recognised department known for its strong BFA program and vibrant graduate studies, contributing to both undergraduate and graduate teaching and research.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in directing, production management and performance‑related subjects.
• Develop and supervise student‑led productions, providing mentorship in professional‑calibre theatre environments.
• Maintain an active creative research agenda through professionally situated production work.
• Collaborate with faculty across acting, design and production to integrate research‑creation with curriculum.
• Participate in departmental service, including curriculum development and community engagement.

Required profile

• PhD or terminal professional degree in theatre directing, production or a related field.
• Demonstrated record of artistic practice and scholarly work in contemporary theatre.
• Experience directing or managing productions in professional contexts.
• Commitment to experiential learning and mentorship of students.

Required skills

• Directing and production management expertise.
• Ability to design and lead collaborative, interdisciplinary theatre projects.
• Strong communication and academic writing skills.
