About the role
Toronto Hydro is seeking two experienced Managers, Engineering to lead its Non‑Wire Alternatives (NWA) program. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Grid Transformation & Innovation, you will shape the strategy and execution of energy‑storage and demand‑response solutions that replace traditional pole‑and‑wire investments.
Key responsibilities
- Lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and students to develop short‑ and long‑term investment plans for NWA and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
- Conduct research, technical studies, and business analyses on energy‑storage, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Local Demand Response (LDR) technologies.
- Deliver NWA and BESS investment plans and collaborate with operations to implement them.
- Manage Investment Planning and Portfolio Reporting (IPPR) for NWA, including energy storage, LDR and other flexibility services.
- Oversee day‑to‑day LDR program activities such as procurement, dispatch support, measurement & verification, and settlement.
- Integrate new platforms and technologies as Toronto Hydro transitions toward a Distribution System Operator (DSO) role.
- Plan and execute BESS projects, including feasibility studies, design coordination and asset‑management planning.
Required profile
- Engineering degree (electrical, mechanical or related) with several years of experience in power‑distribution or utility engineering.
- Proven leadership experience managing technical teams and delivering complex projects.
- Strong understanding of NWA concepts, energy‑storage systems, DERs and demand‑response programs.
- Experience with investment planning, portfolio reporting and regulatory compliance in the utility sector.
Required skills
- Technical knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and related control technologies.
- Familiarity with demand‑response mechanisms and local demand‑response (LDR) program operations.
- Ability to conduct technical and economic analyses for NWA solutions.
- Project management and stakeholder coordination skills.
