About the role
The Legal Counsel, Litigation will support Scotiabank’s Legal Department in Canada by delivering high‑quality legal advice on civil litigation matters across the Bank and its global subsidiaries. The role ensures compliance with regulations, internal policies, and risk frameworks while fostering a customer‑focused culture.
Key responsibilities
- Manage all civil litigation matters against the Bank and its Canadian subsidiaries, excluding employment, tax, and collections cases.
- Oversee litigation involving global subsidiaries and coordinate with external counsel.
- Represent the Bank at mediations and provide strategic advice on litigation risk, regulatory complaints, and other matters.
- Conduct and direct internal investigations related to legal disputes.
- Develop strong relationships with internal business units and understand the Bank’s risk appetite in daily decisions.
- Ensure effective operational controls for regulatory, conduct, and other risk categories.
Required profile
- Graduate of a recognized law school with 3‑5 years of in‑house or private‑practice experience.
- Member in good standing of a Canadian Law Society.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication abilities.
- Advanced drafting and legal writing skills.
- Banking and securities litigation experience is a plus.
