Backend Developer – Montreal

About the role

Valnet is looking for an experienced Backend Developer to join its Montreal development team. You will work on proprietary systems, building and maintaining high‑traffic web applications and internal tools that support multiple website projects.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain public sites and internal CMS applications.
• Collaborate with functional analysts to define features during the analysis phase.
• Establish and enforce code standards, modular architecture, and library development practices.
• Monitor and optimise performance, Core Web Vitals and other web‑page metrics.
• Maintain strong knowledge of current web development standards and tooling.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience.
• Proven ability to work on high‑traffic websites and optimise for performance.
• Experience in a fast‑paced, cross‑functional team environment.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of SQL (MySQL, ClickHouse) and PHP.
• Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Experience with REST APIs, AJAX and single‑page applications.
• Object‑oriented programming and modular code design.
• Version control (Git/BitBucket), CI/CD (Jenkins), issue tracking (JIRA).
• Shell scripting (Bash), Visual Studio Code.
• HTML5, CSS3, SCSS.
• Understanding of SEO, Google Analytics and PageSpeed.
• Familiarity with vector databases and LLM prompting is a plus.
