Data Scientist – AI/ML for Document Understanding

About the role

Scotiabank is looking for a highly specialized Data Scientist to join the Customer Insights Data & Analytics team. You will design, build and deploy next‑generation AI/ML solutions that extract insights from structured and unstructured documents, driving business value across the bank.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, test and implement machine‑learning models for document understanding tasks such as data extraction and classification.
• Write and maintain high‑quality Python code to preprocess, process and analyze large volumes of data, creating robust data pipelines.
• Design, evaluate and scale specialized ML models, ensuring accuracy, fairness and compliance with the bank’s risk appetite.
• Create visualizations and reports to communicate insights to business stakeholders.
• Stay current with advances in generative AI, Python libraries and Document AI best practices.
• Collaborate with data engineers, product managers and other stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable AI solutions.

Required profile

• Strong storytelling ability to translate complex data insights into business impact.
• Experience working on production‑grade AI/ML models within a regulated environment.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting technical results to non‑technical audiences.
• Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
